POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the guidance of the Group Exercise Coordinator/Wellness Director, a Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within the class. Modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Has a thorough understanding of movement disorders and maintains working knowledge of movement disorders and available resources
2. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the Group Exercise Coordinator, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals
3. Share weekly updates and answer questions regarding YMCA programs and events
4. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA
5. Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture
6. Be responsible for subbing for other group exercise instructors as needed
7. Keeps accurate class attendance records
8. Maintain cleanliness and organization of equipment used for the fitness studio
9. Attend all initial and ongoing trainings and monthly staff meetings
10. Evaluate the fitness equipment and report the needs to the Group Exercise Coordinator
11. Maintain certifications and stay current with exercise techniques
12. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations
13. Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimum age of 18
2. Valid Driver’s License or photo ID, reliable transportation, and working phone number
3. Knowledge, skill, and ability to learn group exercise choreography and instruction
4. Knowledge and understanding of kinesiology and exercise for all populations, specifically movement disorders
5. Knowledge, skill, and ability regarding exercise techniques and proper use of exercise equipment
6. Strong personal commitment to overall wellness and have a positive attitude
7. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
8. Have, or be in the process of obtaining CPR/AED, Basic First Aid
9. Have, or be in the process of obtaining Power for Parksinson’s certification (or equivalent)
10. Ability to pass background checks in accordance with all Berwick Area YMCA policies for child abuse prevention
